Security Companies | Definition | Back to Glossary << Security guards are a permanent fixture in all business establishments, and even in places of residence. They will usually be uniformed and may have an appearance similar to policemen. Their primary functions will be to “detect, deter, observe and report”. By being visible at all times, offenders are discouraged from committing crimes knowing that an attentive security guard will be able to observe and report their wrongdoings. Security guard services are provided by professional security companies with the proper accreditation and qualification. While they may sometimes look like the police, security guards are not police officers and vice versa. It is not their function to arrest, although they can perform citizen’s arrest. At the same time, many members of the police force perform private security services after their service with the government, and those aspiring to be policemen usually start their career as security personnel. Security guards perform a variety of functions, including acting as the first layer of law enforcement, until the members of the police force arrives in the scene of crime.
